Don’t Fall for the Fall Skincare Overhaul
Don’t Fall for the Fall Skincare Overhaul
Every fall, right around the time the pumpkin spice starts flowing and the sweaters come out, skincare advice seems to shift too.
Suddenly we’re being told it’s time to undo summer damage, start exfoliating more, add stronger actives, book a peel, swap out half our products, and basically give our entire skincare routine a seasonal renovation.
But before you clean out your bathroom cabinet in the name of fall skincare, hear me out:
Your skin probably doesn’t need an overhaul.
It may need a few thoughtful adjustments—but that’s very different.
Your Skin Doesn’t Know It’s September
Your skin isn’t looking at the calendar thinking, Welp, summer’s over. Time for a chemical peel.
What it does notice are changes in its environment.
As we move into fall, temperatures begin to drop, humidity changes, we spend more time indoors, and eventually the heat comes on. All of those things can influence how your skin feels and functions.
You may notice a little more dryness or tightness. Your skin might not tolerate the exact same routine it loved during the humid summer months. Maybe you need a little more hydration or a richer moisturizer.
Those are reasons to adjust your routine—not completely reinvent it.
Be Careful With the “Undo Summer” Mentality
One of the biggest fall skincare messages is that now is the time to correct all the damage you did over the summer.
And yes, summer can leave its mark. Increased sun exposure can contribute to oxidative stress, pigmentation, dehydration, and inflammation.
But you can’t h spending one season damaging your skin and the next season aggressively trying to correct it and still expect it to be healthy.
Healthy skin is created through consistent support all year long.
Instead of asking, How do I erase everything that happened this summer? I’d rather ask:
What does my skin need to function well heading into the next season?
That might mean antioxidant support. More hydration. Consistent sunscreen. A professional treatment. Or simply staying the course with a routine that is already working beautifully.
More Exfoliation Isn’t Automatically Better
Fall also seems to have become unofficial “exfoliation season.”
Cooler weather and less intense sun exposure can make fall an appropriate time for certain professional treatments, but that doesn’t mean every face needs to suddenly be scrubbed, peeled, and resurfaced.
Your skin barrier still matters in October. Over-exfoliating can leave skin feeling dry, tight, sensitive, inflamed, or reactive—exactly the opposite of the healthy fall glow we were going for.
Exfoliation should have a purpose. If your skin needs it, great. If it doesn’t, you don’t earn bonus skincare points for doing more.
Try a Fall Skincare Edit Instead
Rather than a complete overhaul, I like the idea of a seasonal edit. Take a look at what you’re already using and ask what actually needs to change.
Maybe your lightweight summer moisturizer isn’t quite cutting it anymore. Maybe you need to layer in a hydrating mist or serum. Maybe summer left behind some visible pigmentation and adding targeted antioxidant support makes sense. Or maybe your skin looks and feels great—and you don’t need to change anything yet.
A good skincare routine should be flexible enough to evolve with your skin without constantly starting over.
Think small adjustments, made intentionally.
And Please Don’t Forget Sunscreen
The swimsuits may be packed away, but your SPF shouldn’t be.
UV exposure doesn’t disappear when the temperature drops, and daily sun protection remains one of the simplest things you can do to support healthy skin and prevent future visible damage.
If we’re talking about protecting your summer results and supporting your skin long-term, sunscreen deserves a spot in the conversation 365 days a year.
Consistency Will Always Beat the Seasonal Overhaul
There will always be a new season, a new trend, a new product launch, and a new reason someone on the internet thinks you need to replace your entire skincare routine.
You probably don’t.
Healthy skin tends to respond really well to the less exciting things: consistency, protection, nourishment, movement, good sleep, stress management, and a routine that actually makes sense for your skin.
So this fall, don’t feel pressured to overhaul everything. Pay attention to your skin. Make a few adjustments where they’re needed. Support it through the changing season.
And if you’re not sure what needs to change? That’s exactly what your esthetician is for.
